Graduate Rewarded For Outstanding Leadership

Over the course of five recent weeks, Samantha Gillingham, a staff member, coach and former extramural athlete with Humber Campus Recreation, won three prestigious leadership awards.

Upon nomination for each award from supervisors, with support from other student-employees, coaches and former teammates, Samantha was recognized for her four years of commitment to the betterment of recreational programs and services, not only on campus, but across the province.

The Student Appreciation Award is student driven and “recognizes students, faculty, staff and administrators who exemplify selfless dedication and excellence” at Humber and Guelph-Humber.  Awards are presented to those few groups or individuals who go “above and beyond to make a significant contribution to the Humber community”.

Samantha was presented with this campus-wide award at a ceremony on the Lakeshore Campus on April 8, 2019.

The Mike Gonder Outstanding Staff Award is presented annually to a student staff member for “outstanding leadership, contribution and dedication to campus recreation programs and services as well as showing a commitment to personal growth and development”.  Named after a former student employee, this award is generally known as the “staff member of the year”.

Samantha was presented with this departmental award at the annual Recreation Extramural Banquet held on April 9, 2019.

The Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR) Student Leadership Award is presented annually to one male and one female student who has “had significant involvement in their institution’s campus recreation programs” including program participation, volunteerism, committee work and program support.  Recipients of this award have left a positive impact on their campus by way of motivating others and promoting active involvement in campus initiatives.

Samantha was presented with this provincial leadership award at the OCAA/OCR Annual General Meeting on May 7, 2019.

After recently graduating from the University of Guelph-Humber with a Degree in Justice Studies, Samantha plans to continue her post-graduate studies at Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus and will return for a fifth year of recreational participation and programming.
