North Volleyball Team Finalists at Lakeshore

North’s extramural volleyball team finished second at the tournament hosted by Humber Lakeshore on January 25th.

Humber veteran, Melissa Holt, opened the day’s scoring for the team against UTM with a big kill.  The Hawks kept up momentum and were able to beat the Eagles 2-0 (25-19, 25-21).  Against Centennial in the second round robin game, Humber prevailed.  The team won 2-0 for the second time in the tournament (25-11, 25-23).

The third game of the day was the team’s toughest yet, facing Durham.  Humber started the game with three straight points before losing ball possession.  The teams then traded points back and forth to the majority of the game.  Quinton Hudgins closed the first set with a kill that put the score at.  The second set of the game saw Durham open up a gap of 5 points, which the Hawks weren’t able to close.  The teams split the game 1-1.

Durham and Humber were tied in the standings after round robin play.  With a higher point differential between these two games, the Hawks were granted the higher position in the standings, setting up a North-Lakeshore semi-final.

The elimination game started with the team from Lakeshore campus taking a 9-3 lead.  North was able to tie the game at 18-18.  On a couple of serving aces by Holt and Hudgins and stellar blocking by veteran, Caroline Podpora, North’s team took the first set 25-21.  In set two, Lakeshore dominated the court and were up by 5 points at two different times in the game.  Lakeshore won the second set 25-17.  In the deciding game, North was able to put up a 15-11 win, moving them forward into the championship game.

On the heels of the momentum built in the previous game, Humber was able to take the first set from UOIT by a fair margin.  Never giving up, the UOIT squad roared back to take the second set, tying the match at 1-1.  In the final set of the tournament, UOIT was able to beat the Hawks and win the tournament.

The Hawks are in action next at Centennial on Friday, February 15th.
