CONCORDIA CLAIMS WOMEN’S CCAA NATIONAL CROWN IN DYING SECONDS!

Toronto, Ontario – November 7, 2009 – The CCAA Women’s Soccer National crown now rests upon the heads of Edmonton’s Concordia University Thunder as they defeated London’s Fanshawe College Falcons in one of the most memorable championship games in history.

In the dying seconds of extra time of the second half, Laura Ellis of the Thunder scored an 18 yard rocket that bended about 15 feet and struck the inside of goalpost, coming to rest in the opposite corner. The goal sealed the game and secured Concordia their first ever Women’s Soccer National Championship Gold Medal.

The game, which was played In front of a crowd of over 500 people at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ontario was tied at the half. Alesha Weicker opened the scoring for the Thunder, only to see Jory Lyn Uyl of the Falcons tie it ten minutes later.

At the half, with the game tied 1-1, Fanshawe came out with a favourable wind at their back. Although this provided the Falcons with the extra push to keep the ball in the Concordia half for a good deal of the time, it was the Thunder that had the best opportunities to score.

“This is a great accomplishment, especially for a school of our size, but more so for the girls that worked so hard all season long.” said Concordia Head Coach Dean Cordeiro. “This is the cherry on top of our undefeated season.”
