KWANTLEN WOWS EM’ AGAIN AS THEY WIN NATIONAL BRONZE IN PENALTY KICKS!
Toronto, Ontario – November 7, 2009 – The Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles, and Keeper Amelia Ng wowed the crowd again at the 2009 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Women’s Soccer National Championships as they captured the Bronze Medal by way of a 1-0, 4-3 penalty kick victory over Quebec’s College Francois-Xavier Garneau.
Kwantlen advanced to the Nationals after winning the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals in penalty kicks to capture the British Columbia Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA) championship. They also won their first game of the tournament on penalty kicks against the host Humber College Hawks.
The game, which was played on a beautiful, sunny afternoon at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ontario was a back and forth affair that saw both teams have wonderful opportunities to put the ball in the net. A cross bar hit by a F.X. Garneau player off a free kick almost won it in regulation. Then an open net for an Eagles player was shut down by a F.X. Garneau defender with minutes to go in the second overtime.
The penalty kick drama then captured the crowd of over 300 people. Kwantlen went score-miss-score-score-score, while the Elans from F.X. Garneau went miss-score-score-score to set up a must score for the Quebec squad to send the game into more kicks. A high shot was somehow tipped by Keeper Amelia Ng, forcing the ball just over the net.
Jubilation then struck the Kwantlen team, and they rushed to celebrate in the open arms of their Keeper.
Players of the Game
F.X. Garneau: Frederique Paradis
Kwantlen: Kelsey Docherty
Due to the length of the game, the Gold Medal game will start at 2:40 pm. London’s Fanshawe Falcons will kick off against Edmonton’s Concordia University Thunder.
